Public Hearing about the Five Cuban imprisoned in the United States for Fighting against Terrorist Organizations in Miami

May 5, 2004 --The Commissions on Constitutional and Judicial Affairs and International Relations of the National Assembly of People's Power of the Republic of Cuba is calling for a public hearing next May 10 to evaluate the present situation of the Five Cubans imprisoned in the United States.

The hearing will be held in the Convention Center of Havana at 8:00 PM. Cuban institutions, as well as jurists, intellectuals, students, journalists, union members from Cuba and from abroad will be present. Also participating will be the attorneys for the defense and the family members of the Five.

Amongst the topics to evaluate is the present legal posture of the case (by Leonard Weinglass, attorney for Antonio Guerrero), as well as the constant difficulties confronted by the Cuban Five and their families regarding their civil rights. New complaints made by the mothers and spouses of the Five relating to the lack of action by the UN Human Rights Commission's mechanisms will also be developed.

Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González and René González, are awaiting the decision of the Federal Court of Appeals in Atlanta. They were convicted unjustly in 2001 merely for monitoring the activities of terrorist organizations that function openly in Miami, after a trial full of irregularities in a highly prejudiced city. The defense has asked for a new trial in another place and the elimination of the charges that were not proven along the way, amongst these charges were conspiracy to commit murder in first degree and conspiracy to commit espionage.
